Renault’s concept EV drove me at 80MPH while I wore a VR headset

I’m driving the multimillion-dollar Symbioz EV concept on a highway in France when Renault-Nissan Senior VP Ogi Redzik hands me an Oculus VR headset. “Put it on. Do you see an image yet?” he asks me. “Not yet. Ahh, yes, now I see it, ” I reply nervously. A minute ago I was on a real road, but now I’m rolling down a fake forested highway in a simulation created by Ubisoft. Meanwhile, Renault’s Level 4 autonomous system has taken the piloting chores (with a professional, joystick-equipped driver backing it up in the passenger seat). It’s a bizarre experience, but I don’t feel sick, because the Symbioz is transmitting real road motion to the headset. That data is then subtly adjusting the virtual image to be in sync with the real-life car movements. I even see simulated versions of the cars and trucks on the road fed in by LiDAR and other sensors. After a few minutes, the headset shows a dramatic eclipse, and the faux Symbioz leaves the road and soars over a canopy of trees. All of this is part of the “mind off” driving experience that Renault is exploring with the Symbioz. With fully autonomous vehicles just around the corner, the company is trying to imagine how we can spend our free time once we surrender the wheel to robots. VR may not be your personal entertainment choice, but it exhibits that idea in a vivid way. “This demo really shows you that when your mind is off, it’s really off, ” Redzik told me. “If we give people back time, I don’t think we should be judging what they are going to use this time for, whether it’s gaming, VR or office work.” Renault sees future cars as more than just A-to-B transportation. As showcased during my tour of the concept, the Symbioz can drive into its own purpose-built house with a matching interior, sit on a special charging pad and backup your solar panels like a rolling PowerWall . With HiFi and video systems (supplied by Devialet and LG, respectively), it could even become a mini-room in your home for work or entertainment. Even the exterior of the Symbioz, dreamed up by Renault’s Senior Design VP Laurens van den Acker, is about the space inside. “The lines of the Symbioz demo car were designed to showcase the interior’s innovations, ” said Patrick Lecharpy, Renault-Nissan’s head of advanced design. The body, built with carbon-fiber panels and a metal chassis, has an extreme cab-forward design to maximize space and is low, long and very wide. The styling is an acquired taste, thanks to the weird mix of a low, curvy front end, and high, windowless, squared-off back. There is no tacked-on sensor array like you’ve seen on Waymo and other self-driving rigs. LiDAR units are hidden in the front headlight covers and rear bumper. Radar and ultrasonic sensors are placed inside the body, and a front camera is fitted at the top of the windshield. There’s also a rear camera hidden in the Renault logo, and side cameras cached in the door handles. AOL/Steve Dent Renault bravely invited me to drive its priceless EV, even though the weather in Normandy was, to use a local term, la merde . I was lucky enough to be on the first test flight; later in the day, only Renault’s drivers could take the wheel because of rain, sleet and hail conditions. We didn’t have to worry about getting wet or cold, though, as the Symbioz came to pick me up from inside its special little house. Once we were all seated, I could start to appreciate the interior design that accommodates all the embedded tech. As Lecharpy noted, inside is where the Symbioz really shines, with a futuristic but not too futuristic cabin befitting a road-going concept car. The driver and passengers get individual seats for safety and comfort. (The Symbioz mock-up shown in Frankfurt had front seats that could swivel into an Orient Express face-to-face seating configuration like Mercedes’ limited F 015 concept , but that was considered too dangerous for a car traveling at freeway speeds.) To maximize space and emphasize the “living room” idea, there is no center console or rear windshield. Nor are there physical mirrors, so rear-visibility is handled by a well-designed camera and display system. LG created the L-shaped OLED front console display and split infotainment touchscreen. It also developed the excellent heads-up display (HUD). Depending on the drive mode, the touchscreens change color to match the interior lighting. Even when the powerful sound system is cranked inside, folks outside the car can barely hear a thing. That’s because for its first car audio project, French HiFi company Devialet carefully considered the harmonics of the car’s body to reduce vibrations. Once I was acclimated, engineers detailed the route and explained how to use the three drive modes. During regular “classic” manual driving, the interior lighting is blue, and for “dynamic” mode, lights on the doors and OLED dash turn red. When you activate the auto drive (AD) setting by pushing two steering wheel buttons at once, everything becomes a champagne gold. The dashboard also displays different animations for each mode — all meant to give you instant visual cues about what the car is doing. If things went south during the auto-drive mode, I was instructed to do nothing and let the specially-trained driver in the front right seat, equipped with joystick controls, take over. He would then pass me back the controls in manual mode. (All of this was legal and approved by French authorities.) AOL The Symbioz rotated 180 degrees on its platform, the glass door opened, and I cautiously set off. After a few minutes getting used to its heft and width, I felt comfortable — or at least, as comfortable as possible while driving a multimillion-dollar, one-of-a-kind prototype. The EV is easy to maneuver thanks to a four-wheel-steering system — despite the 4.92-meter length (16.1 feet), it can turn on a dime. Once on the highway, the first step was to test “dynamic” manual driving. The Symbioz has a 72 kWh battery and produces 360 kW (483 horsepower), a bit less in both categories than Tesla’s P75D Model S. In standard mode power is limited to 160 kW, but the EV still accelerated quickly and could easily maintain freeway speeds. The handling and ride were smooth, but not exactly sporty. I found the LG’s OLED screens easy to read, even in direct sunlight. The GPS navigation system by TomTom worked well and displayed points of interest, charging stations, and other info. LG’s heads-up display was integrated seamlessly into the dash and floated ahead of the windshield in a natural, non-distracting way. It displayed essential information like the speed limit, current speed and turn-by-turn directions. Driving conditions were grim, alternating minute-by-minute between sunshine, rain, sleet and hail. Nevertheless, once established in the center of my freeway lane at 130km/h (80MPH), I pushed the two steering-wheel buttons with my thumbs to activate the auto-driving mode. This, I must add, was my first time using a fully-automatic self-driving vehicle (I tested Audi’s 2019 Level 3 Audi A8, but the Level 3 self-driving was disabled). At first, I was stuck behind a truck, so the Symbioz moved to overtake it. Unfortunately, the semi was spraying a flood of water and, unbeknownst to us, the right-hand headlight cover had fogged up, foiling the LiDAR unit inside. The AD subsequently disengaged with a bit of drama as the EV swerved from side to side. As instructed (and this was hard), I resisted touching the wheel, and the safety driver sat to my right quickly took over. After establishing control, he handed me back the wheel, and I quickly switched back to AD mode. This time, it kept things steady for a much longer period. Two GoPro cameras recorded all of these activities, as shown in the video above. Ubisoft With no need to guide the car, I slipped on the Oculus VR headset and followed Redzik’s instructions. Soon enough, I was immersed in Ubisoft’s simulation, rolling down a forested road and seeing a virtual version of the Symbioz cockpit and traffic around me. Next, there was a virtual eclipse, and the scene transformed into a nighttime cityscape. Finally, the virtual EV took flight, soaring over a dreamy, fog-filled forest. Though mildly worried, I was completely comfortable using the headset during the three-minute demo. VR is notorious for producing motion sickness even if you’re sitting still, but Ubisoft combines TomTom’s GPS road maps and the Symbioz’s acceleration data, feeding it all into the simulation. “The acceleration, the speed, the localization in the lanes, the lateral acceleration, everything is taken into account by the VR experience, ” said Mathieu Lips, director of the Symbioz demo car project. All of this is to avoid a perfect, vomitous storm of VR sickness and carsickness. “There is complete coherence between what you see on the screen, what your brain interprets and what your body is feeling [based on] what your inner ear interprets, ” Deborah Papiernik, senior VP at Ubisoft, told me. “And because there is perfect coherence in real time between the two, the experience is extremely comfortable.” That’s not even mentioning the insanity of putting on a VR headset while driving, but Renault wanted to make a strong statement about the “mind off” idea. “They wanted an experience that would provide escapism, that would allow the driver to let go, ” Papiernik explains. While you’re in your VR bliss, the Symbioz keeps reality intrusions to a minimum. Renault worked with French highway company SANEF to automate the process of going through a toll booth and even erected special WiFi towers along our route. “They have installed five antennas called ‘roadside units’ that use the 5.0 GHz long-range WiFi, ” Lips told me. “Those will inform the vehicles about which toll gates doors are open for autonomous driving.” When the Symbioz approaches a pay toll, it automatically heads to a lane that supports autonomous driving and wireless payment. It’s then supposed to slow to 30km/h (18MPH), transmit the payment, and pass the raised barrier without stopping. During my demo ride, the EV concept did find and squeeze into the narrow automatic payment lane. However, rather than cruising through, it had to execute a “stop and go” maneuver due to the brutal weather. It was still an impressive display of the tech’s potential, however. Renault During the drive, Renault gave me a demo of the AV system. As you’d expect, LG’s OLED dislay provided a bright, contrasty video-viewing experience, though I found the screen a bit too small. The sound from the Devialet audio system was clear and very loud, considering that it uses sound modules six times smaller than regular car speakers. All of that can be controlled by a special smartphone app, depending on the mode and where it detects that you are in the car. For instance, the driver won’t see anything on the main screen unless the Symbioz is in AD mode. Instead, it will only turn on video for the rear passengers. You can also control the climate, configuration of the car and other factors using the app. In the “Alone@home, ” mode, the dashboard and steering wheel retract, freeing up more space (this option wasn’t available in the real car, just a static display). “Relax” moves the seats to a “zero-gravity” reclined position, while “Lounge” lowers the armrests and turns you 10 degrees toward your passenger. Suffice to say, this is one complex car. “There is multiplicity of systems, complicated and innovative systems, which means a lot of interfaces between them, ” Lips explained. “And we only had one vehicle. The biggest challenge was to gather all this technology together into one unique [car].” But wait, there’s more The Symbioz is equipped with almost too much tech to mention in a single article, but here are a few other highlights. A fragrance dispenser with different odors depending on the driving mode. An LED sunroof that’s transparent in “classic” or auto-drive mode, but opaque in “dynamic” mode. An app that transmits travel and vehicle information to your smartphone twice, 15 and five minutes before you depart. Automatic “valet” parking. A future system that could push the dashboard up and retract the steering wheel to give you more interior space. “Zero gravity” seats that lay back nearly flat and a “lounge” mode that rotates them 10 degrees for more intimate proximity to seat-mates. Dynamic dashboard animations depending on the drive mode Sure, Renault’s Symbioz test drives were a smart PR move to bring attention to its electric and self-driving vehicle development. (Putting a VR experience into a Level 4 self-driving EV is a pretty well-played strategy for enticing tech journalists.) But Renault and its partners, Nissan and Mitsubishi, have an interesting story to tell. The alliance is looking at not just the technology for next-generation Leafs, Zoes and other green or autonomous cars, while also focusing on the driver experience. “The Symbioz is our early interpretation of how the new technologies related to autonomous and new experiences in a car will come to market, ” said Redzik. “We’re using this vehicle as an opportunity to learn … to find out how else you can engage with the vehicle when you’re not focused on driving.” By putting a VR headset on me in mid-drive, Renault showed that technology could make in-car entertainment comfortable and motion-sickness-free. At the same time, it forced me to confront the idea (and my fear) of AI completely taking over driving chores. AOL/Steve Dent Another thing that I realized while driving blind on the freeway? Before I’m ready to release control, I want both technical and physical proof that the systems are infallible. The problems we had with the inclement weather showed me that the systems are still a work in progress, though Renault assured me that better tech is around the corner. “For sure, the sensors will improve, ” said Lips. “There is a lot of progress going on that will allow the car to rely more on its sensors.” A lot of car companies like GM, Waymo and Uber have big plans about ride-sharing, carpooling and hailing services, and Renault is no doubt exploring that too. The last time I checked, though, most of us were still alone in our cars. The Symbioz does have a social aspect as a self-driving vehicle that can come into your house and entertain you and your family while you drive. But the most interesting part of it is what it can do for you when you’re alone. It’s clear that self-driving EVs, once we figure out the tech, will help the planet and make our roads safer. But Renault has taken that idea further with the Symbioz, combining autonomous tech with entertainment options like VR to create a rolling cocoon that gives us a brief detente in our information-overloaded lives. Rather than your commute being a kind of torture, it could become productive, a way to connect with yourself or get a moment to have a laugh, relax and be entertained. In other words, Renault has executed its vision of how self-driving cars may transform your A-to-B time-suck into one of the best parts of the day.

Microsoft Will Soon Start Bundling Drivers With Windows Store Games

Microsoft will start bundling drivers with Windows Store games to improve the performance of the game once downloaded. A report on Thurrott adds: This will work by the game download trigging Windows Update to acquire the minimum driver requirements to make sure that application works as intended. This may perturb some users who like having complete control over the driver updates for their hardware as this auto-download mechanism will overwrite the existing installation of the driver. Of course, you can still roll-back the update but hopefully Microsoft gives us a way to stop the auto-download of the driver via the Windows Store when this feature arrives. iOS 10 preview: Apple’s software takes a big step forward

Rumor has it Apple isn’t going to reinvent the iPhone this year , but you definitely can’t say the same about its software. iOS 10 was unveiled to the world late in the company’s Worldwide Developer Conference keynote, and for good reason — there were many, many new software features to unpack. And now it’s time to play. Assuming you have the guts to install unfinished software, you’ll be able to grab the iOS 10 Public Beta very soon (as long as you’re part of Apple’s Beta Software Program, anyway). As a quick reminder, the preview is compatible with the iPhone 5 and newer, the iPad mini 2 and newer and the sixth-generation iPod Touch. Before you choose your sacrificial iDevice, though, read on to get a better sense of what works in the beta, what doesn’t, and how Apple’s approach to software continues to evolve. The Caveat I’ve been using the public beta build on an iPhone 6s for two days, and so far it’s been remarkably stable. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve already encountered a handful of hiccups and bugs, but I haven’t run into any full-blown showstoppers either. Still, if you’d prefer not to troubleshoot or restart your phone, you’re better off steering clear of Apple’s Beta Software Program. But that goes without saying. Here’s what you need to keep in mind: Not all of the features Apple previewed at WWDC are live yet. In fact, some of the most interesting ones aren’t. (Same goes for Apple’s macOS Sierra preview , as a matter of fact.) Most of Siri’s improvements center on linking up with third-party apps to let you send money through Square Cash, for instance, or track runs with MapMyRun just by asking. Sorry! You can’t do that today; it’ll be a few months yet before developers get their SiriKit -enabled apps ready. Ditto for applications like Skype and WhatsApp: When updated this fall, they’ll display calls on your lock screen as though they were regular phone calls. This version of iOS 10 also doesn’t consistently transcribe your voicemails either, or get lyrics for your songs, or let you use Apple Pay on the web . The list goes on. Suffice to say the software going live today is just a taste of the software Apple plans to ship in the fall. The look It’ll likely be a while yet before we see a redesign as thorough as what we got with iOS 7 , but hey: iOS 10 still feels like a refreshing change of pace. Apple’s typeface is thicker by default and notifications and widgets are neatly contained in bubbles, all of which goes a long way toward making things feel cleaner. Speaking of notifications, you can use 3D Touch on supported iPhones to take action without even having to jump between apps. Think: giving a Facebook message a thumbs up or archiving emails in Outlook. Alas, you can’t do any of this while the phone is locked. Those bubbly new widgets appear when you use 3D Touch on supported apps too, and from there it takes one more touch to add it to your Today feed. They can be a little temperamental, though: Only after two days of testing did the weather widget finally decide to display the outside temperature. (The answer: too darn hot .) Naturally, Apple redesigned lots of other bits and bobs for this release. The Control Center you invoke by dragging up from the bottom of the screen has been split into two pages, one of which is reserved for music controls. Now, back to the big, bold aesthetic Apple is pushing this year: It can be hard to avoid. Perhaps the best example of this is the radically redesigned Music app, which is… divisive, to say the least. It’s all about punchy colors and extreme legibility. I don’t mind it, but others who have seen it are not thrilled. Pro tip: You can change the font size used in the Music app from the device’s settings. This new aesthetic carries over into other redesigned apps like Health (which now also lets you opt-in for organ donation) and the Clock app (which now has a bedtime mode to keep you well-rested). The fun Nearly all of the neat features in the updated Messages app work just fine. You can “handwrite” notes by turning the iPhone on its side, send heartbeats with digital touch, leave “tapback” reactions on things people send you, and more. My favorite so far: using bubble effects to basically yell at other people using iOS 10. Quickly sending GIFs with the included #images iMessage app is a close second; in case you forgot, Messages is one of those Apple-made apps that will soon benefit from third-party developer support. For now, though, the only other available iMessage apps let you share your recently played music or share animated images like the ones Apple uses on its Watch. It’s also now dead simple to share a recent photo since you have a live camera preview as soon as you tap the photo icon. One touch snaps a shot and preps it for sending, though there’s a noticeable delay in this beta build. Oh, word to the wise: If you don’t want to get caught in flagrante delicto , hold off on sending racy messages. If you send a message obscured by invisible ink to someone who doesn’t have iOS 10, the message appears normally with a follow-up that says “sent with invisible ink.” The app sometimes says the secret message hasn’t been delivered to the non-iOS 10 device, but it almost always was. Apple has added plenty to the traditional messaging experience, and it’s all pretty fun, but it sometimes feels like a bit much. Apple is facing stiff competition from Snapchat, Facebook’s Messenger and others, but with all that’s going on here, I can’t help but think the company is just throwing stuff against a wall to see what sticks. It’s not strictly part of the upgraded Message app, but there’s a lot of fun to be had with the keyboard as well. By default, the keyboard suggests an emoji when it detects a word that matches it. If you switch to the emoji keyboard in that case, all the words that can be emoji-fied glow orange. Tapping any of them replaces the word with the pictograph. Too bad that other keyboard tricks, like free time suggestions based on your calendar, don’t seem to work all the time yet. For now, only specific phrasing (like “I am available at…”) seems to trigger the schedule suggestion. The helpful You’d be forgiven for thinking Apple didn’t do much with its Photos app; at first glance, there aren’t many obvious changes. (Your albums are now laid out in a grid instead of a list, so enjoy.) The biggest difference here is that iOS doesn’t just use your photos’ metadata to organize everything; it can organize them based on what’s depicted in them too. It’s a lot like Google Photos , except all of the machine learning magic happens on the phone itself. The downside? If you have a ton of photos like I do, it takes iOS a long time to initially scan them all. Side note: Don’t be shocked if this blows through your battery. The results are usually great. You can now search for broad categories like “cat” or “drink” or “bikes” in addition to just places, and the results have been almost completely been right on the mark. One search result for “bikes” returned a photo from Barcelona where a moped lay at the bottom of the frame, shrouded in shadows. Not bad, Apple. Your photos automatically get bunched into Memories too, like “Best of the Year” and “Last weekend.” There’s more to memories than just an array of photos; you’ll get to see where the photos were taken and who’s in them. It’s too bad the auto-created video montages Apple (“memory movies”) have never loaded properly for me. Maybe your luck will be better than mine. On the plus side, you can edit Live Photos now, and all the changes you make apply to the still and the video that surrounds it. Live Photos still aren’t my thing, but this is still a welcome move nonetheless. Engadget’s parent company might own MapQuest (which is apparently still a thing), but I’m all about Google Maps. My devotion has been more or less unwavering, but Apple Maps in iOS 10 just scored major points with me thanks to the improved (and enlarged) navigation interface. Seriously, it’s so much easier to read at a glance than Google Maps that I can almost see myself switching. There’s also a little weather display in the corner, and the app is better about suggesting places you might want to go to and how to get there. You’ll eventually see other apps like OpenTable hook into listings you find in Maps, but we’ll have to wait a few months before that functionality becomes available. The overdue There’s a lot more going on with the Music app than just a new look: The whole flow has changed. By default, you’re dropped off in the Library upon launch, where you can access all the songs you’ve saved or downloaded. Simple enough. It’s the For You section that seems to have gotten the most attention. Instead of just giving you a bunch of random playlists you might like, Apple now does a better job of explaining why its choices might be up your alley. The Connect tab is gone this time, so posts from acts you follow are in For You as well. Thankfully, they’re buried at the bottom and easy to ignore if you find them as utterly pointless as I do. Perhaps the most important interface change is that search gets a tab of its own, making it easier to find your perfect summer jam. Like Music, Apple News also received a facelift that’s big on bright colors and big text. And again, the biggest change is the For You section, which is to say it now actually works. The Top Stories were the same between devices running iOS 9 and the iOS 10 beta, but the update brings subsections of stories that seem better tuned to your interests. In my case, those subsections included the Middle East, currency markets, startups and technology — all things I dig, and have searched for recently. Throw in notifications for breaking news and we finally have an Apple News that feels like it’s worth using. The odds and ends Not everything fits neatly into a box, but here are a few changes to the iOS formula that you should definitely be aware of. Yes, you can remove Apple’s first-party apps , and yes, it is glorious. Technically, it’s just user data that’s deleted; the app itself remains hidden on the device, but I’ll take that symbolic victory. Raise to Wake does exactly what it says, and it works remarkably well for checking the time and your notifications You can swipe left from the lockscreen to launch the camera. (It takes a little getting used to.) I didn’t always love how fast the TouchID sensor worked on the 6s and 6s Plus. Coincidentally, Apple now requires you to push the home button to unlock instead of just laying a finger on it. No more inadvertent unlocks (though you can revert to the old way in settings)! You can access Spotlight search from just about anywhere, since the search bar now appears at the top of the drag-down notifications shade. Apple’s Home app is pretty (there’s that bold aesthetic again), but I couldn’t properly test it since I didn’t have any HomeKit gear on hand. Check back for our impressions in our eventual full review. We can’t issue a verdict on iOS 10 until it launches this fall, but Apple has taken some significant steps forward here. iOS 9 built the foundation for a lot of these features, and with iOS 10 we’re seeing Apple try to figure out how they best work together. Sometimes that means rewriting the rules, and other times that means letting other people build on top of the existing platform. How well that will all work is the big question, and we should have our answer in a few months.

Tesla takes the wheel: driving a Model S hands-free

Elon Musk isn’t happy just introducing an automobile and walking away to work on next year’s model. Instead his company continues to offer over-the-air upgrades to current vehicles. The latest software enhance is landing in its electric cars tomorrow with a slew of new autopilot features . They won’t drive you around town, but will make highway driving and parking a bit easier. While the new Autopark does exactly what you would expect, Autosteer is a bit more ambitious. With it, you’re supposed to be able to go for miles on the open road with it doing most of the heavy lifting. The car tracks lane markers and uses enhanced GPS data to keep the car from launching off into the median. I had a chance to drive a Tesla on the highway with its new ability — without using my hands — and it was outstanding, but also a bit weird. The big feature, Autosteer, is less autonomous driving and more of a very advanced version of cruise control. For those looking forward to getting a robot car to drive them to work, Musk expects Tesla will have a fully autonomous vehicle ready to go in three years. In the meantime, this new autopilot feature will maintain the cruise control speed while keeping a safe distance between itself and the vehicle in front of it and stay in its lane. It’s a gradual step toward the future that’ll make commuting less of a pain. After setting the mode in the car’s updated UI and double-tapping the cruise control arm, the car does the driving for you. It’s an eerily smooth transition. If the vehicle determines you’re not centered in a lane, it adjusts itself without jerking the vehicle. After that, I removed my hands from the wheel and the Model S tracked itself along Interstate 280 better than most of the other drivers on the road. It had no trouble with meandering corners. It kept a safe distance behind the car in front of it (something you can manually adjust if you would like more cushion). Adjusting the speed was a matter of flipping the cruise control arm: up to go faster and down to slow down. Meanwhile you just sit there. Because you’re hurtling down the freeway, you’re still paying attention, but it lowers the stress level a bit. If you’re stuck in traffic, it takes the pain out of the stop-and-go experience because it does it for you. You’ve gone from driver to driver/passenger. This is the first step to the pure passenger experience of truly autonomous cars. While it’s cool, Musk stresses that this is a public beta of the feature and that drivers should keep their hands on the wheel at all time: “We want people to be quite careful.” That warning becomes an audible alert in the vehicle when the lane markers become faded or another car slides into your lane. At that point, you’re reminded that, yeah you’re still the driver. The entire Autosteer system is built around the vehicle’s confidence that what’s about to happen is safe. If the roadway is less than optimal, you can’t engage it. If while engaged, it detects something out of the ordinary, an audible and visual warning inform you to take control. If you ignore that, the warning gets more persistent and the system will eventually slow the car down and bring it to a complete stop. That confidence spills over into the Auto Lane Change feature. While in Autosteer, I attempted to automatically move to the left lane. A vehicle was approaching at a rather quick pace on my left and the car wouldn’t complete the move on its own. At that point, it got a little too careful and wouldn’t automatically move itself into any lanes. After having the passenger turn the feature off and then back on again (just like a router, but speeding down the highway), I was switching lanes (when it was safe) without checking my blind spots or even grabbing the wheel. For someone that’s completely obsessed with safe driving, it’s unnerving letting the car take over like this. But with a quick brake tap or slight turn of the steering wheel, I was back in control. While existing the freeway, I was able to complete a few automatic lane changes, but when the car detected a car that was behind and to the right of me, it again wouldn’t go on its own. I accelerated and pulled into the right lane as I would with any other car. The car errors on the side of caution without making you feel like you’re being coddled. Yes, it’ll be abused (get ready for more texting and driving), but even while driving down a surface street, it avoided a bus sticking out in the road. But it’s not even close to infallible. Hence the repeated warnings from Musk during a briefing. It also has difficulty with sharp turns and inclement weather conditions like rain, snow and fog. Tesla is adamant that the feature is “hands on” so you’re supposed to keep those mitts on the wheel. So don’t starting updating Twitter while you’re supposed to be driving. Yet, It’ll get better as more and more Teslas drive in autopilot mode and feed road information back to companies highly detailed mapping system. The update also brings enhanced versions of traffic-aware cruise control, side collision warning, vehicle hold (keeping the car rolling on inclines), Autopark and better climate control that cools or heats the interior quicker without using more energy. All of that is wrapped into a brand new UI. Tesla is still a few years away from getting us from point A to Pint B without our interaction. But in the meantime, it’s tackling the commute, the worst aspect of the driving experience by letting its cars take the wheel. The prevailing form factor for consumer-level 3D printers and CNC mills is a box, dictated by the axial/gantry-style mechanisms of these machines. But entrepreneur Zaib Husain and engineer Azam Shahani were thinking outside of the box, literally, when they devised their Makerarm prototype. An articulated arm is cantilevered off of a column mounted to a worksurface; the arm has a 180-degree sweep, ten inches of Z-travel and a maximum reach of nearly 16 inches. So what does this arm do? Well, everything. The creators have designed a series of interchangeable tool heads that can hold an almost absurd variety of: Cutting heads for milling and engraving, nozzles for 3D printing either FDM-style or resin-based, a laser cutter, a soldering iron, a pen plotter, and even a series of pick-and-place tools like a claw gripper, an electromagnet and a suction cup. Check out its range of operations: I found the auto-leveling feature shown in the video the most fascinating, where the head tracks the slanted surface of the workpiece. The sensors that must be contained within to perform such a feat make me wonder if the arm can also automatically index off the corner of the workpiece. Holddown–not to mention bolting the arm’s base to your worksurface–is presumably still the user’s domain. Unsurprisingly, the $999 early bird special is already sold out on Kickstarter . That was for just the Makerarm and a single head pack including the electromagnet and pen plotter. The fully-loaded version that ships with all of the heads (see below) is going for $2, 199. Though they’ve still got a long way to go, it seems certain the project will be funded. Though the campaign is only in their first few days, they’ve already raised $145, 653 of a $349, 750 goal, and there are still 28 days left to pledge. And assuming they do make it, they’re planning on shipping by October 2016.

China, Israel, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States are apparently developing precursor technology. “Fully autonomous weapons are not unambiguously bad. They can reduce burdens on soldiers. Already, military robots are saving many service members’ lives, for example by neutralizing improvised explosive devices in Afghanistan and Iraq. The more capabilities military robots have, the more they can keep soldiers from harm. They may also be able to complete missions that soldiers and non-autonomous weapons cannot.” But Baum, who founded the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute, goes on to outline the potential downsides, and there are quite a few. Automakers Move Toward OTA Software Upgrades

Lucas123 writes: While some carmakers today offer over-the-air software upgrades to navigation maps and infotainment head units, Tesla became the first last week to perform a powertrain upgrade overnight. But as the industry begins adopting internal vehicle bus standards with greater bandwidth and more robust security, experts believe vehicle owners will no longer be required to visit dealerships or perform downloads to USB sticks. IHS predicts that in the next three to five years, most, if not all automakers, will offer fully fledged OTA software-enabled platforms that encompass upgrades to every vehicle system — from infotainment, safety, comfort, and powertrain. First, however, carmakers must deploy more open OS platforms, remove hardened firewalls between vehicle ECUs, and deploy networking topologies such as Ethernet, with proven security.
