Lost Languages Discovered in One of the World’s Oldest Continuously Run Libraries

Saint Catherine’s Monastery, a sacred Christian site nestled in the shadow of Mount Sinai, is home to one of the world’s oldest continuously used libraries. Thousands of manuscripts and books are kept there — some of which contain hidden treasures. An anonymous reader shares a report: Now, a team of researchers is using new technology to uncover texts that were erased and written over by the monks who lived and worked at the monastery. Many of these original texts were written in languages well known to researchers — Latin, Greek, Arabic — but others were inscribed in long-lost languages that are rarely seen in the historical record. Manuscripts with multiple layers of writing are known as palimpsests, and there are about 130 of them at St. Catherine’s Monastery, according to the website of the Early Manuscript Electronic Library, which has been leading the initiative to uncover the original texts. With the rise of Islam in the 7th century, Christian sites in the Sinai Desert began to disappear, and Saint Catherine’s found itself in relative isolation. Monks turned to reusing older parchments when supplies at the monastery ran scarce. To uncover the palimpsests’ secret texts, researchers photographed thousands of pages multiple times, illuminating each page with different-colored lights. They also photographed the pages with light shining onto them from behind, or from an oblique angle, which helped “highlight tiny bumps and depressions in the surface, ” Gray writes. They then fed the information into a computer algorithm, which is able to distinguish the more recent texts from the originals. Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Wikimedia Executives Receive Six-figure Golden Handshakes

Andreas Kolbe writes: The Wikimedia Foundation’s (WMF) recently released Form 990 shows that the organisation has developed a practice of handing outgoing managers six-figure severance payments, The Register reports. The foundation, which relies entirely on unpaid volunteers to generate the content of its websites, has taken around $300 million dollars over the past five years through fundraising banners placed on Wikipedia. The WMF says it is “committed to communicating with our volunteers, donors, and stakeholders in an open, accountable, and timely manner”, but has long been criticised for providing little transparency on the salaries of its executives, limiting itself to the legally required Form 990 disclosures that only become public two years after the event. The FBI Spent Two Years Investigating An Online Cult That Didn’t Exist

A two-year FBI investigation apparently centered on the satirical web site “GodHatesGoths”. Long-time Slashdot reader v3rgEz writes: In 2005, the FBI launched an investigation into the “Church of the Hammer, ” a fundamentalist Christian sect which called for the wholesale slaughter of practitioners of the goth subculture. Two years later, the investigation was closed, on grounds that the Church didn’t exist. The FBI’s threat assessment detailed “an extremely right-wing Christian group that adheres to a Middle Ages Catholic text called the ‘Malleus Malificarum.'” But MuckRock.com reports that “The Bureau’s main source on the case was a goth who had engaged with members of the Church via their Yahoo Group…trying to dispel their misconceptions about the relationship between the subculture and Satanism.” After two years of scouring through crime databases and making phone calls to the Salem police department, FBI investigators actually visited the GodHatesGoths web site — which turned out to be a parody. They made misleading statement on an affidavit, went to court, and had Justina’s parents stripped of custody. They stopped her painkillers, leaving her in agony. They stopped her heart medication, leaving her tachycardic. They said she was a danger to herself, and locked her in a psych ward. A Surprising Carbon Fiber Alternative: Nanofibers Made from Carrots

Carbon fiber is awesome stuff, being both lightweight and strong. It’s also a difficult-to-produce, non-renewable material. But for over a decade two material scientists from Scotland, David Hepworth and Eric Whale, have been working on a natural alternative made from, believe it or not, carrots. To be clear, Hepworth and Whale’s discovery will not replace what we think of as carbon fiber—which is actually carbon fibers that have been bonded with polymers—altogether. The new material, known as Curran, still requires the polymers to form it into a cohesive material. But the nanofibers that Curran is made from are not only lighter and stronger than the carbon stuff, but are extracted from the much more renewable source of carrot pulp and other root vegetables. Hepworth and Whale’s company, CelluComp , has already commercialized Carrot Stix , a line of fishing rods, made with Curran. They’ve been selling them since 2007 and have reportedly moved over half a million units.  Currently the company is focusing on integrating Curran into paints and coatings, as it can add durability and structural properties to those materials while replacing those nasty off-gassing VOCs.  As for applications in 3D product designs beyond fishing rods, CelluComp hired an organization called EMPA (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology) to find ideal uses for Curran. According to Smithsonian Magazine , EMPA’s research indicates “that the smartest, most ecologically responsible use for the nanofibers…was for protective sporting goods, in particular motorcycle helmets which have to be both strong and light.” In their analysis, EMPA found that protective sporting goods, which need stiff, strong, light fibers and low economic overhead, were some of the best use cases for Curran. [EMPA researcher Roland] Hischier and his team are also looking at the viability of using it in surfboards and insulation for mobile homes. The challenge now is taking the material from the lab to production, and making sure that it’s still ecologically smart on a grander scale. With any luck, the studies will pan out and the material will…take root. Because the most exciting thing about Curran isn’t necessarily what it can do, but where it comes from. As CelluComp states, Curran is manufactured from waste streams produced by the food processing industry. Common raw materials are carrots or sugar beet and, because only materials otherwise discarded by the food industry are used, it does not compete with food crops for scarce land. CelluComp is working with major players in the food processing industry to optimise use of vegetable waste. Al-Shabaab Video Threat Means Heightened Security at Mall of America

Reuters and other news outlets carry the news that the Minnesota’s gigantic Mall of America is under heightened security after a video threat posted online by terrorist group Al-Shabaab. Also at CNN and CBS News. According to Reuters’ version of the story: The U.S. homeland security chief said on Sunday he takes seriously a threat made by Somali-based Islamist militants against shopping malls, including the Mall of America in Minnesota, and urged people going there to be careful. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson was reacting to a video released by al Shabaab appearing to call for attacks on Western shopping areas, specifically mentioning Mall of America, the West Edmonton Mall in Canada and London’s Oxford Street. … Mall officials issued a statement about the threat made by the group, saying they are monitoring events with the help of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. “Mall of America has implemented extra security precautions, some may be noticeable to guests, and others won’t be, ” the officials said. Human Eye’s Oscillation Rate Determines Smooth Frame Rate

jones_supa writes: It should be safe to conclude that humans can see frame rates greater than 24 fps. The next question is: why do movies at 48 fps look “video-y, ” and why do movies at 24 fps look “dreamy” and “cinematic.” Why are games more realistic at 60 fps than 30 fps? Simon Cooke from Microsoft (Xbox) Advanced Technology Group has an interesting theory to explain this all. Your eyes oscillate a tiny amount, ranging from 70 to 103 Hz (on average 83.68 Hz). So here’s the hypothesis: The ocular microtremors wiggle the retina, allowing it to sample at approximately 2x the resolution of the sensors. Showing someone pictures that vary at less than half the rate of the oscillation means we’re no longer receiving a signal that changes fast enough to allow the supersampling operation to happen. So we’re throwing away a lot of perceived-motion data, and a lot of detail as well. Some of the detail can be restored with temporal antialiasing and simulating real noise, but ideally Cooke suggests going with a high enough frame rate (over 43 fps) and if possible, a high resolution.
