Ethereum Exchange Reimburses Customer Losses After ‘Flash Crash’

An anonymous reader writes: “The price of ethereum crashed as low as 10 cents from around $319 in about a second on the GDAX cryptocurrency exchange on Wednesday, ” reports CNBC, calling it “a move that is being blamed on a ‘multimillion dollar market sell’ order… As the price continued to fall, another 800 stop loss orders and margin funding liquidations caused ethereum to trade as low as 10 cents.” An executive for the exchange said “Our matching engine operated as intended throughout this event and trading with advanced features like margin always carries inherent risk.” Though some users complained they lost money, the price rebounded to $325 — and according to a report on one trading site, “one person had an order in for just over 3, 800 ethereum if the price fell to 10 cents on the GDAX exchange, ” reports CNBC. “Theoretically this person would have spent $380 to buy these coins, and when the price shot up above $300 again, the trader would be sitting on over $1 million.” Yet the currency exchange announced Friday that they’re honoring everyone’s gains, while also reimbursing customers who suffered losses. “We view this as an opportunity to demonstrate our long-term commitment to our customers and belief in the future of this industry.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Boeing Expects To Save Millions In Dreamliner Costs Using 3D-Printed Titanium Parts

According to Reuters, Boeing has hired Norsk Titanium AS to print titanium parts for its 787 Dreamliner, paving the way to cost savings of $2 million to $3 million for each plane. The 3D-printed metal parts will replace pieces made with more expensive traditional manufacturing, thus making the 787 more profitable. From the report: Strong, lightweight titanium alloy is seven times more costly than aluminum, and accounts for about $17 million of the cost of a $265 million Dreamliner, industry sources say. Boeing has been trying to reduce titanium costs on the 787, which requires more of the metal than other models because of its carbon-fiber composite fuselage and wings. Titanium also is used extensively on Airbus Group SE’s rival A350 jet. Norsk worked with Boeing for more than a year to design four 787 parts and obtain Federal Aviation Administration certification for them, Chip Yates, Norsk Titanium’s vice president of marketing, said. Norsk expects the U.S. regulatory agency will approve the material properties and production process for the parts later this year, which would “open up the floodgates” and allow Norsk to print thousands of different parts for each Dreamliner, without each part requiring separate FAA approval, Yates said. Norsk said that initially it will print in Norway, but is building up a 67, 000-square-foot (6, 220-square-meter) facility in Plattsburgh in upstate New York, where it aims to have nine printers running by year-end. Quantum Teleportation Achieved Over 7km of Cable

An anonymous reader quotes a report from ScienceAlert: Quantum teleportation just moved out of the lab and into the real world, with two independent teams of scientists successfully sending quantum information across several kilometers of optical fiber networks in Calgary, Canada, and Hefei, China. Quantum teleportation relies on a strange phenomenon called quantum entanglement. Basically, quantum entanglement means that two particles are inextricably linked, so that measuring the state of one immediately affects the state of the other, no matter how far apart the two are — which led Einstein to call entanglement “spooky action at a distance.” In the latest experiments, both published in Nature Photonics (here and here), the teams had slightly different set-ups and results. But what they both had in common is the fact that they teleported their information across existing optical fiber networks — which is important if we ever want to build useable quantum communication systems. To understand the experiments, Anil Ananthaswamy over at New Scientist nicely breaks it down like this: picture three people involved — Alice, Bob, and Charlie. Alice and Bob want to share cryptographic keys, and to do that, they need Charlie’s help. Alice sends a particle to Charlie, while Bob entangles two particles and sends just one of them to Charlie. Charlie then measures the two particles he’s received from each of them, so that they can no longer be differentiated — and that results in the quantum state of Alice’s particle being transferred to Bob’s entangled particle. So basically, the quantum state of Alice’s particle eventually ends up in Bob’s particle, via a way station in the form of Charlie. The Canadian experiment followed this same process, and was able to send quantum information over 6.2 km of Calgary’s fiber optic network that’s not regularly in use. SonicSpike writes “Overstock plans to become the first big U.S. online retailer to accept Bitcoin, as Patrick Byrne, the company’s libertarian chief executive, warms to the virtual currency as a refuge from government control. TSA blows a billion bucks on unscientific "behavioral detection" program, reinvents phrenology

10 years and $900M later, the TSA’s behavioral analysis program is a debacle . Here’s the US General Accountability Office on the program : “Ten years after the development of the SPOT program, TSA cannot demonstrate the effectiveness of its behavior detection activities. Until TSA can provide scientifically validated evidence demonstrating that behavioral indicators can be used to identify passengers who may pose threat to aviation security, the agency risks funding activities [that] have not been determined to be effective.” Basically, the TSA has spent a decade and nearly a billion dollars reinventing phrenology. I feel safer already. For the report, GAO auditors looked at the outside scientific literature, speaking to behavioral researchers and examining meta-analyses of 400 separate academic studies on unmasking liars. That literature suggests that “the ability of human observers to accurately identify deceptive behavior based on behavioral cues or indicators is the same as or slightly better than chance (54 percent).” That result holds whether or not the observer is a member of law enforcement. It turns out that all of those signs you instinctively “know” to indicate deception usually don’t. Lack of eye contact for instance simply does not correlate with deception when examined in empirical studies. Nor do increases in body movements such as tapping fingers or toes; the literature shows that people’s movements actually decrease when lying. A 2008 study for the Department of Defense found that “no compelling evidence exists to support remote observation of physiological signals that may indicate fear or nervousness in an operational scenario by human observers.” TSA’s got 94 signs to ID terrorists, but they’re unproven by science [Nate Anderson/Ars Technica]

They’ve gathered data on some of the most treasured items in the archives, and they’re encouraging people who work with 3D printers to help them explore new ways of using the data. Our team scanned 20 of our collection items (The Wright Flyer, a fossil whale and even an exploded star!) in 3D and have made the data available for download (and print for those with 3D printers).
