Infosys Fined $35M For Illegally Bringing Programmers Into US On Visitor Visas

McGruber writes “The U.S. government fined Infosys $35 million after an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department found that the Indian company used inexpensive, easy-to-obtain B-1 visas meant to cover short business visits — instead of harder-to-get H-1B work visas — to bring an unknown number of its employees for long-term stays. The alleged practice enabled Infosys to undercut competitors in bids for programming, accounting and other work performed for clients, according to people close to the investigation. Infosys clients have included Goldman Sachs Group, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc. Infosys said in an email that it is talking with the U.S. Attorney’s office, ‘regarding a civil resolution of the government’s investigation into the company’s compliance’ with employment-record ‘I-9 form’ requirements and past use of the B-1 visa. A company spokesman, who confirmed a resolution will be announced Wednesday, said Infosys had set aside $35 million to settle the case and cover legal costs. Irony: iPhone 5S Users Reporting Blue Screen of Death

MojoKid writes “It’s been a long time since many have seen a dreaded “blue screen of death” (BSoD), but it’s back and in the in the most unlikeliest of places. Oddly enough, some Apple iPhone 5S owners are reporting BSoD errors, though they’re a little different from the ones you may remember seeing on Windows desktops. Rather than spit out an obscure error code with a generic description, some iPhone 5S devices are suddenly turning blue before automatically restarting. The Numbers app in Apple’s iWork suite, a free program with new iPhones, seems to be the primary cause, though BSoD behavior has also been observed in other applications, according to complaints in Apple’s support forum.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Samsung Begins Mass Production of Industry’s First 3D NAND Flash

Lucas123 writes “Samsung has announced it is mass producing the industry’s first three-dimensional (3D) Vertical NAND (V-NAND) flash memory that breaks through current planar NAND scaling limits, offering gains in both density and non-volatile memory performance. The first iteration of the V-NAND is a 24-layer, 128Gbit chip that will eventually be used in embedded flash and solid-state drive applications, Samsung said. It provides 2 to 10 times higher reliability and twice the write performance of conventional 10nm-class floating gate NAND flash memory. Initial device capacities will range from 128GB to 1TB, ‘depending on customer demand.’ ‘In the future, they could go considerably higher than that, ‘ said Steve Weinger, director of NAND Marketing for Samsung Semiconductor. Samsung’s process uses cell structure based on 3D Charge Trap Flash (CTF) technology and vertical interconnect process technology to link the 3D cell array. Door-To-Door Mail Delivery To End Under New Plan

First time accepted submitter Hugh Pickens DOT Com writes “Reuters reports that under a cost-saving plan by the US Postal Service, millions of Americans accustomed to getting their mail delivered to their doors will have to trek to the curb and residents of new homes will use neighborhood mailbox clusters. ‘Converting delivery away from door delivery to either curb line or centralized delivery would enable the Postal Service to provide service to more customers in less time, ‘ says Postal Service spokeswoman Sue Brennan. More than 30 million American homes get door-to-door delivery and another 50 million get their mail dropped at their curbside mailboxes. But the Post Service, which is buckling under massive financial losses, sees savings in centralized mail delivery. Door-to-door delivery costs the Postal Service about $353 per address each year while curbside delivery costs $224, and cluster boxes cost $160 per address. But unions say it’s a bad idea to end delivery to doorsteps and will be disruptive for the elderly and disabled. ‘It’s madness, ‘ says Jim Sauber, chief of staff for the National Association of Letter Carriers. ‘The idea that somebody is going to walk down to their mailbox in Buffalo, New York, in the winter snow to get their mail is just crazy.'” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Apache OpenOffice 4.0 Released With Major New Features

An anonymous reader writes “Still the most popular open source office suite, Apache OpenOffice 4 has been released, with many new enhancements and a new sidebar, based on IBM Symphony’s implementation but with many improvements. The code still has comments in German but as long as real new features keep coming and can be shared with other office suites no one is complaining.” The sidebar mentioned brings frequently used controls down and beside the actual area of a word-processing doc, say, which makes some sense given how wide many displays have become. This release comes with some major improvements to graphics handling, too; anti-aliasing makes for smoother bitmaps. In conjunction with this release, SourceForge (also under the Slashdot Media umbrella) has announced the launch of an extensions collection for OO. The ten fastest supercomputers on the planet, in pictures

A Chinese supercomputer known as Tianhe-2 was today named the world’s fastest machine, nearly doubling the previous speed record with its performance of 33.86 petaflops. Tianhe-2’s ascendance was revealed in advance  and was made official today with the release of the new Top 500 supercomputer list . Tianhe-2 was developed at China’s National University of Defense Technology and will be deployed in the country’s National Supercomputing Center before the end of this year. “The surprise appearance of Tianhe-2, two years ahead of the expected deployment, marks China’s first return to the No. 1 position since November 2010, when Tianhe-1A was the top system,” the Top 500 announcement states. “Tianhe-2 has 16,000 nodes, each with two Intel Xeon Ivy Bridge processors and three Xeon Phi processors for a combined total of 3,120,000 computing cores.” The combined performance of the 500 systems on the list is 223 petaflops, up from 162 petaflops in the previous list released six months ago. A petaflop represents one quadrillion floating point operations per second, or a million billion.
