Do you recall the early days of the Apple TV , when you could expect to pay over $100 to put an Apple-powered media hub in your living room? They might come roaring back. Sources for 9to5Mac claim that the next Apple TV should cost between $149 to $199 (the final price is still up in the air) when it ships, which is reportedly sometime in October. That’s still less than the original cost when it was new, but you could be in for sticker shock if you were expecting Apple to keep the price to $99 or less . It could make the Fire TV and Roku 3 look like relative bargains, depending on how attached you are to Apple’s ecosystem. Not that such a hike would be entirely surprising, mind you. Many of the rumors swirling around Apple’s next set-top suggest that it’ll be a much more powerful device with an A8 processor, more storage, Siri voice recognition, an app store and (in recent rumors) motion control . It wouldn’t so much be a sorely overdue update as a redefinition of what the Apple TV is — instead of focusing almost exclusively on streaming video, it’d be a Shield TV-like box that can handle gaming and other tasks suited to the big screen. And if that’s too rich for your blood, you may not have to worry. The insiders say that the third-generation Apple TV will stick around, and that it’ll get the company’s long-fabled streaming TV service . You’d miss out on the app store, Siri and other features that would likely require new hardware, but you wouldn’t have to scrounge for extra cash just to see how Apple tackles streaming media in the future. Netflix hopes you won’t mind losing access to some big movies

Here’s hoping that you weren’t bent on watching The Hunger Games: Catching Fire or World War Z on Netflix — if so, you don’t have much time to do it. Netflix has confirmed that it won’t renew its longstanding movie deal with Epix , which will lead to many Lionsgate and MGM titles disappearing from the service come September. The company hopes you won’t mind, though. As Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos points out, there are legions of original shows lined up — Netflix is betting that you’ll be too busy watching Narcos to worry that a favorite flick just disappeared. And where is Epix going? If you believe Recode , it’s not giving up on third-party services altogether. Reportedly, it’s is “likely” to sign a deal with Hulu instead. That’s bad news for folks outside of the US (where Hulu is virtually non-existent), but it beats losing all subscription-based access. Whatever happens, it’s clear that Netflix is making a calculated move to get as much popular content as it can without breaking the bank. As you might gather, content agreements like the one with Disney are expensive — it could be difficult to preserve absolutely every deal when only some of them are likely to translate to more subscribers. Moreover, it’s getting difficult to offer a truly wide selection when there’s a race to snap up exclusives . Like it or not, you may have to subscribe to more than one streaming provider (or rent the missing titles) to cover your typical viewing habits. Researchers make a living circuit out of bacteria

Under the right circumstances, bacteria can be quite cooperative — both with each other and the organism they’re living in . A research team at Rice University has managed to exploit that natural congeniality to, for the first time, create a biological circuit that works much like a conventional computer chip. But the goal of the researchers’ work isn’t to build better biocomputers , it’s to help them more fully understand how these organisms interact within our guts. “They naturally form a large consortium, ” Rice synthetic biologist Matthew Bennett said in a statement. “One thought is that when we engineer bacteria to be placed into guts, they should also be part of a consortium. Working together allows them to effect more change than if they worked in isolation.” To that end, the team’s proof-of-concept model employs two species of genetically engineered bacteria (both variants of the common E. Coli ) that that regulate each other’s production of a specific protein via intercellular signaling pathways. Rice University’s cooperative bacterial colonies – Image Credit: Rice University Specifically, one population, the “activators”, was tasked with increasing the expression of one set of genes while the others, the “repressors, ” acted to down-regulate other genes. Taken together, the circuit generated rhythmic gene transcription oscillations across the entire population. This coordination allows each species to produce the proteins more efficiently than if they did so individually. In turn, that could lead to greater bacterial biofuel production yields. “The main push in synthetic biology has been to engineer single cells, ” Bennett said. “But now we’re moving toward multicellular systems. We want cells to coordinate their behaviors in order to elicit a populational response, just the way our bodies do.” Eventually, these systems could even help us regulate our own internal chemistries. “One idea is to create a yogurt using engineered bacteria, ” Bennett continued. “The patient eats it and the physician controls the bacteria through the patient’s diet. Certain combinations of molecules in your food can turn systems within the synthetic bacteria on and off, and then these systems can communicate with each other to effect change within your gut.” The team recently published their findings in the journal Science . Slack ties in with Windows 10’s notification center

Communication / productivity tool Slack is starting to blend in with Windows 10 after its latest update. In version 1.2.0 , notifications show up in the desktop OS’ Action Center, and clicking them links directly to the appropriate conversation in the app. Many Windows applications never updated to take advantage of new features in Windows 8, or even to become fully compatible with how it worked with hardware like touchscreens, so it’s encouraging to see some support. It’s not a Windows 10 Universal app yet, but the company has a Windows Phone version in beta , just months after it came out of beta on the desktop. There’s also a fresh new icon for Windows 10, and color-coded notification icon in the tray. Uber hires researchers who hacked Chrysler Uconnect

Less than a month after their command performances at the Black Hat and Def Con security conferences in Las Vegas, security researchers Charlie Miller (late of Twitter) and Chris Valasek (formerly of the security firm IOActive) have been poached by Uber—which ironically had security flaws in its own in-car technology exposed by University of California-San Diego researchers this month as well. According to a report from Reuters , Uber will announce the hiring of Miller and Valasek on Monday. Miller and Valasek’s research on Fiat Chrysler’s Uconnect system  exposed vulnerabilities in the design of the system that allowed them to take remote control of many of the systems of a targeted vehicle—as they demonstrated by shutting down the throttle of a 2014 Jeep Cherokee while it was being driven on an interstate by Wired reporter Andy Greenberg . The research, coordinated with Fiat Chrysler, led to the distribution of a fix by Chrysler and blocking of vulnerable ports by Sprint, the mobile carrier providing the network for Uconnect. But the attention garnered by the video led to Chrysler announcing a recall of 1.4 million vehicles to accelerate the installation of the software patches. Uber announced grants to the University of Arizona to fund autonomous vehicle technology earlier this week. The hiring of Miller and Valasek is likely part of an effort to ensure that Uber’s autonomous vehicle development work remains secure and may be partially prompted by the findings of the UCSD researchers Ian Foster, Andrew Prudhomme, Karl Koscher, and Stefan Savage. The group presented research at the Usenix Security conference two weeks ago that showed a telematics device used by Uber and some auto insurers could be compromised to take remote control of systems in a similar fashion to Miller and Valasek’s hack of the Jeep. AT&T grudgingly accepts $428 million in annual government funding

AT&T has struck a deal with the US government to get nearly $428 million per year to bring 10Mbps Internet service to parts of rural America after protesting that it shouldn’t have to provide speeds that fast. The money comes from the Connect America Fund, which draws from surcharges on Americans’ phone bills to pay for rural Internet service. AT&T accepted the money even though it  argued last year that rural customers don’t need Internet service better than the old standard of 4Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream. The FCC ignored AT&T’s protests  in December, raising the Connect America Fund download standard to 10Mbps while leaving the 1Mbps requirement unchanged. Eight months later, AT&T is now willing to provide at least 10Mbps/1Mbps service to 1.1 million rural homes and businesses in 18 states in exchange for “$427,706,650 in annual, ongoing support from the Connect America Fund,” yesterday’s FCC announcement said . The FCC said this will bring broadband to 2.2 million customers, apparently assuming an average of two people for each home and business. AT&T will get the money over six years with an option for a seventh, potentially bringing the total to about $3 billion, according to Multichannel News . AT&T and other carriers getting Connect America funding have to deploy Internet service to 40 percent of funded locations by the end of 2017, 60 percent by the end of 2018, 80 percent by the end of 2019, and to 100 percent of locations by the end of 2020, the article said. “This is one of the largest amounts accepted by any company,” FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said. “The financial support provided by American ratepayers will bring significant benefits to AT&T’s rural communities, and we urge state and local leaders to help communities realize these benefits by facilitating the broadband buildout.” 10Mbps/1Mbps is still lower than the definition of broadband, which the FCC raised to 25Mbps down and 3Mbps up. The 18 states where AT&T will use the money are Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin. AT&T has had wireline operations in 22 states since it bought BellSouth in 2006. In exchange for getting that merger approved, AT&T promised home Internet service of at least 200kbps (meeting the definition of broadband at the time) to 100 percent of residences by the end of 2007. AT&T claimed it met the requirement but has let its network fall into disrepair in the years since, leaving millions with slow Internet service or none at all. AT&T promised to expand broadband deployment in exchange for the FCC’s recent approval of its purchase of DirecTV, but not in the areas where it will use Connect America funding. The Connect America funding is for “rural service areas where the cost of broadband deployment might otherwise be prohibitive,” the FCC said. AT&T wasn’t the only company to get Connect America Fund money yesterday. CenturyLink accepted $506 million  annually to get 10Mbps Internet to nearly 1.2 million rural homes and businesses in 33 states. Overall, ten carriers accepted $1.5 billion in annual support to serve 3.6 million homes and businesses under the latest Connect America Fund awards, another FCC announcement said . The others include Cincinnati Bell, Consolidated Telecom, Fairpoint, Frontier, Hawaiian Telcom, Micronesian Telecom, and Windstream. The tenth carrier is Verizon, though that case is a bit complicated. Verizon conditionally accepted $48.6 million a year to serve rural areas in Texas and California, subject to regulatory approval of a sale that will transfer Verizon’s systems in those states to Frontier. Verizon, which also objected to the new 10Mbps requirement, did not accept any funding in states where it’s keeping its wireline facilities. There’s still $175 million left to be doled out, due to carriers not accepting the entire amount. “In states where carriers have declined support, the subsidies will be awarded by a competitive bidding process,” the FCC said.

It’s that time of year again. Apple’s next iPhone event will take place on September 9th at 10AM PT, live at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. This is expected to be the unveiling of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, which are reported to have animated wallpapers , 4K video capabilities, upgraded 12-megapixel cameras and front-facing flash, among other new features. We may even see something about force-touch iPhones . The event invite is light on details, as usual, but features the tease, “Hey Siri, give us a hint.” Well, Siri? We’re waiting.
