Watch this self-healing material handle a bullet

NASA-funded research has created a material that could self-heal in seconds. Two layers of solid polymer sandwich a gel that with an ingredient that solidifies on contact with air (i.e. when one or both of the outer layers is damaged). This differs from other approaches that rely on a mostly-liquid compound , or similar, slower techniques . The protective applications in space craft (like the ISS) are obvious, and could add a vital line of defense against dangerous debris. The ISS already has shields to protect it, but reactive armour in the event of damage would be even more reassuring. Back down here on earth, the same material could be used in cars, pips, containers and even phones ( beyond scratches ). Watch the material get shot and self-heal in the video below. BitTorrent patched against flaw that allowed crippling DoS attacks

The maintainers of the open BitTorrent protocol for file sharing have fixed a vulnerability that allowed lone attackers with only modest resources to take down large sites using a new form of denial-of-service attack. The technique was disclosed two weeks ago in a research paper submitted to the 9th Usenix Workshop on Offensive Technologies. By sending vulnerable BitTorrent applications maliciously modified data, attackers could force them to flood a third-party target with data that was 50 to 120 times bigger than the original request. By replacing the attacker’s IP address in the malicious user datagram protocol request with the spoofed address of the target, the attacker could cause the data flood to hit the victim’s computer. In a blog post published Thursday , BitTorrent engineers said the vulnerability was the result of a flaw in a  reference implementation called libuTP . To fix the weakness, the uTorrent, BitTorrent, and BitTorrent Sync apps will require acknowledgments from connection initiators before providing long responses. The Nebia Showerhead Atomizes Your Shower Water

Five years in the making, the Nebia showerhead is designed to get more water onto your body while reducing the actual amount you’re using. How does it do that? Science. The Nebia is the brainchild of Carlos Gomez Andonaegui, who ran a health club in Mexico City. He observed that running all of those showers was consuming a lot of water; after attacking the problem with his father, a retired engineer, they conceived of a showerhead that could effectively atomize the water. During the subsequent years of development, thermofluid experts were brought in to refine the design. The result is that the Nebia increases the surface area of the agua by a factor of 10, while using less than a third of the stuff! Consumers are clearly interested; the Kickstarter campaign is well past its $100, 000 goal with nearly $2.6 million in funding, and nearly every Early Bird special is gone. What’s also interesting is that five pledgers have opted for the $10, 000 package to receive 40 Nebias each, indicating that someone who runs an apartment complex, health club or similar has taken note. The water savings, of course, scales up: With 14 days left in the campaign, here’s still a pledging option available to receive a single Nebia for $299, expected to retail for $399 when it comes out next year. I do wonder a bit about the installation: Those of you with plumbing experience, or experience designing plumbing fixtures, do you reckon the press-fit shown in the video will be strong enough to both support the weight of the device over time, and provide a leak-free seal? And whatever gasket or grommet is serving to provide the internal seal is bound to wear out over time; I think I’d be tempted to caulk-tack the back of the unit into place against the tiles, but I suppose it would need to be ripped off to replace the gasket or grommet. Any thoughts?

AMD’s R9 Nano crams a full Fury X into a tiny 6-inch form factor

12 more images in gallery Earlier this year, AMD unveiled three new graphics cards: the R9 Fury X, R9 Fury, and R9 Nano. While the top-of-the-line water-cooled R9 Fury X and air-cooled R9 Fury have both since been released to positive reviews, the mini-ITX sized R9 Nano has remained something of a mystery. Fortunately, the Nano appears to have been worth the wait. While the Nano costs the same as a Fury X—$649, or about £530 (UK pricing is unconfirmed)—the diminutive card also sports same full-fat Fiji chip, which is crammed into its teeny 6-inch form factor. With the R9 Nano you get a full 4096 stream processors, 256 texture units, 64 ROPs, and 4GB of 4096-bit memory high-bandwidth memory operating at 1000MHz. AMD claims performance is around 8.2 TFLOPS, which is only five percent below that of the Fury X. Even better, the Nano needs just a single 8-pin PCIe power connector, with a typical power consumption of 175W, which is miles below the 275W of the Fury X. Of course, such dramatic power savings have to come from somewhere, and for the Nano that means a reduction in clock speed. The Nano’s GPU is rated for “up to 1000MHz,” with AMD saying that under typical usage in most games it runs between 850MHz and 900MHz. That’s around a 14 percent decrease over the 1050MHz of the Fury X, but it’s still impressive given the Nano’s size.
